Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?
Jesus replied: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your mind."
This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it: "Love your neighbor as yourself."

—Matthew 22: 36-39

Seeking God and serving humanity are two arcs on the same circle. Each points toward the other in an ongoing cycle that draws us ever closer to becoming the people we were created to be.

When his disciples asked Jesus which was the greatest commandment, he spoke first of loving God, then neighbor. Establishing a strong spiritual foundation for service work provides volunteers with a source of inspiration and strength.

It can help them develop a clear appreciation of the full humanity of the brothers and sisters they serve and the injustices that bring about the problems they are trying to address. It challenges them to explore their own motivations for getting involved and offers resources for getting through the difficulties and frustrations they may face in this work.

This website is intended as a resource for those who would serve their neighbors in a way that is grounded in the love of God. It includes three sections:

» Service
